Dark Folk · For anyone stuck in a tarpit idea
Dalton Caldwell · Dalton Caldwell on tarpit ideas
“Most startup ideas are tarpit ideas.”- Dalton Caldwell
Dalton Caldwell has watched over 1,000 startups come through YC across 21 batches. On Lenny's podcast, he described how tarpit ideas trap founders: they seem like unsolved problems, you get positive feedback from everyone, but people have been starting that same startup since the '90s. The median founder spends a full year stuck before realizing it. Tarpit ideas are the ones that sound brilliant at dinner parties (everyone nods, everyone agrees) but they trap founders because the obvious-sounding problems are obvious for a reason. The real opportunities feel weird and hard to explain.
