Kim Scott spent ten months praising an employee's work while knowing it wasn't good enough. When she finally had to let him go, he looked her in the eye and said 'Why didn't you tell me? I thought you were on my side.' That moment — the realization that her 'kindness' was actually cruelty — became the origin of Radical Candor.
