Lenny Rachitsky · How to learn the most about a candidate from a single interview question
“I want to understand what hard means for them. I want to understand why it was hard. I want to understand how they overcame that difficulty, how they worked with other people to overcome that difficulty, and how much agency they had in overcoming that.”- Geoff Charles, VP of Product at Ramp
Lenny collected the favorite interview questions of nearly 150 podcast guests and distilled them into 25 high-signal questions. Geoff Charles's 'What's the hardest thing you've ever done?' stood out because it tests for grit, self-awareness, and agency all at once. Annie Pearl (ex-CPO of Calendly) uses a similar approach: 'I look for people being brutally honest about how bad it was and why it failed.'
